Two experiments examined whether text quality is related to online management of the writing processes. Experiment 1 focused on the relationship between online management and text quality in narrative and argumentative texts. Experiment 2 investigated how this relationship might be affected by a goal emphasizing text quality. In both experiments, psychology students were instructed to think aloud while composing their texts. Reaction times to auditory probes were also collected to reflect writers' cognitive effort. Two sets of variables were measured: general temporal indicators (fluency, prewriting pause) and online management of writing processes (number, mean length of episodes). Finally, text quality was assessed. As expected, results confirmed that narrative and argumentative texts are composed using different strategies. Students also composed better texts when a quality-based goal had been set. The main reliable indicator of text quality was an increase of the prewriting pause and of planning processes. These findings indicate that writers tailor their writing behavior to match the type and quality of the text they are asked to produce. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals in romantic relationships experience stigma, prejudice, and discrimination stemming from widespread social devaluation of same-sex relationships. Research on same-sex couples has demonstrated a negative association between experiences of stigma and relationship quality. However, critical questions remain unanswered regarding how experiences of stigma become more or less meaningful within the context of same-sex relationships. This paper presents a study of the stories that a purposive sample of 99 individuals in same-sex relationships wrote about their relational high points, low points, decisions, and goals, as well as their experiences of stigma directly related to their relationships. Narrative analysis of these stories revealed that participants utilized several psychological strategies for making meaning of their experiences of stigma within the context of their relationships. Some participants framed stigma as having a negative impact on their relationships, while others framed stigma as relevant, but external to their lives. Some participants saw stigma as providing an opportunity to (re)define notions of commitment and relational legitimacy. Additionally, many participants framed stigma as bringing them closer to their partners and strengthening the bond within their relationships. The results of this study illuminate the psychological strategies individuals in same-sex couples use to make meaning of, cope with, and overcome societal devaluation thereby furthering understandings of the association between stigma and intimacy within marginalized relationships. Reviews the book, Memory, war and trauma by Nigel C. Hunt (see record 2010-17048-000). Hunt’s book presents a very different perspective on how memory, war, and trauma interface, drawing upon a variety of sources not frequently accessed by psychologists. He promotes an interdisciplinary approach to studying memory and war; however, rather than drawing upon the usual fields, such as biology or sociology, Dr. Hunt suggests that a careful examination of history and literature are also integral to developing a complete understanding of memory and war. This book is not designed for individuals unfamiliar with the field of trauma and war. Memory, war and trauma highlights the limitations of current empirical approaches to studying war trauma and presents a narrative methodology that he argues will better capture the unique individual experience of trauma. Hunt rightly demonstrates weaknesses of current methods, and suggests that the narrative method may be the solution to some of the problems with current methods. Though his argument is likely that the narrative method should supplement rather than replace current experimental method, one is left feeling that he believes current methods are wholly inadequate and his method is better. Despite this central weakness, this book will be a benefit to psychologists who study and treat individuals touched by war because it will encourage them to think beyond traditional approaches to research and treatment. In this article we apply postmodern insights to sandplay therapy. In doing so, we seek to move sandplay therapy from its traditional base of an endeavor at problem solving: a therapeutic method to aid one's diagnosis and address concerns over functioning. Rather, we offer an approach to sandplay therapy from a base of postmodern thought. As has been done in the field of family therapy with solution-building therapy (De Jong & Berg, 2002) and narrative therapy (White, 2007), postmodern insights transform this therapeutic method into a narrative endeavor concerned with the articulation of identity as the means to foster change in the client. Fantasy play and storytelling serve an important role in young children’s development. While computers are increasingly present
in the world of young children, there is a lack of computational tools to support children’s voices in everyday storytelling,
particularly in the context of fantasy play. We believe that there is a need for computational systems that engage in story-listening
rather than story-telling. This paper introduces StoryMat, a system that supports and listens to children’s voices in their
own storytelling play. StoryMat offers a child-driven, story-listening space by recording and recalling children’s narrating
voices, and the movements they make with their stuffed animals on a colourful story-evoking quilt. Empirical research with
children shows that StoryMat fosters developmentally advanced forms of storytelling of the kind that has been shown to provide
a bridge to written literacy, and provides a space where children engage in fantasy storytelling collaboratively with or without
a playmate. The paper addresses the importance of supporting young children’s fantasy play and suggests a new way for technology
